How BopLearn Measures Learning
Transparent, fair, and encouraging β here's how we track your child's progress
BopLearn Performance Index (BPI)
The BPI is a single score from 0 to 2,100that represents your child's overall learning performance across 7 skill areas. Each skill area contributes a maximum of 300 points.
How it's calculated:The BPI uses a weighted average of your child's game performance. Recent sessions count more than older ones (using exponential decay weighting), so the score reflects current ability rather than historical performance.
The 7 skill areas are:
What the score means: A higher BPI indicates stronger performance across more skill areas. The score naturally grows as your child plays more games and improves.
Year Level Equivalence
We map your child's BPI score to an approximate year level based on the New Zealand Curriculum framework. This helps you understand where your child is performing relative to age expectations.
When we say your child is "performing at Year 3 level," it means their scores across games are consistent with what we would expect from a child in Year 3 of primary school.
| Year Level | Age Range | BPI Score Range | Performance Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year 0 | 5 | 0 - 300 | Foundational |
| Year 1 | 5-6 | 300 - 600 | Developing |
| Year 2 | 6-7 | 600 - 900 | Progressing |
| Year 3 | 7-8 | 900 - 1200 | Competent |
| Year 4 | 8-9 | 1200 - 1500 | Proficient |
| Year 5 | 9-10 | 1500 - 2100 | Advanced |
Note: These benchmarks are currently simulated based on curriculum expectations. As our user base grows, we will replace these with real cohort data for more accurate comparisons.
Age Comparison
How percentiles work:A percentile tells you how your child compares to others in their age group. If your child is in the "Top 16%," it means they scored higher than 84% of children their age.
Why we compare within age groups: Children develop at vastly different rates. Comparing a 5-year-old to an 8-year-old would be meaningless. We only compare children to peers of the same age to ensure fair and meaningful insights.
Currently using simulated benchmarks based on developmental research. Real cohort data from BopLearn users is coming soon, which will make these comparisons even more accurate.
